FRENCH PHOTOGRAPHER BORN IN 1991
Photographer and journalist from Roubaix, Charles Thiefaine lives between France and the Middle East where he leads artistic projects such as Iraq – territory, Ala Allah, and more recently Walking with Dragons. His practice is on the border between documentary and point-of-view photography. He discovers and arranges stories that seem evocative to him and tries to propose a singular document around territories marked notably by periods of conflict. Charles Thiefaine collaborates with the French press (M le monde, Libération, Mouvement) and international press (Washington Post, T le temps, Vice). His work is also the subject of exhibitions (Circulation(s), Rencontres du Xème, Copenhagen Photo festival) and a book to be released in 2021 (Tahrir).
ONGOING PROJECT : «L’ÎLE AU TRÉSOR»
A boxer from the Golden Glove, a fisherman from the fish market, a young jouster and his family: in the series Treasure Island, Charles Thiefaine will meet the inhabitants of Thau Island to try to draw a portrait of this working-class neighborhood in the north of Sète. This project will document a cosmopolitan and mixed territory built on water. The Treasure Island series will re-draw the contours of a sometimes stereotypical society by introducing imagination and creating new stories.

ONGOING PROJECT : «SPECULATIONS LIQUIDES»
Liquid Speculations seeks to broaden our understanding of what the sea recycles, what it metabolizes, by linking the humanitarian crisis that is currently unfolding in the Mediterranean to another phenomenon observable along the Mediterranean coast: the proliferation of jellyfish. The relationship to the sea that this project explores carries with it ghosts of human passages, memories of subjugation and control of resources, from the historical era to our current tipping point in the Anthropocene era: the era of proliferation.
